Sony has announced that its new PlayStation 4 gaming console has sold more than 30 million units worldwide since its 2013 release. The video game manufacturer says the PS4 continues to have the fastest growth in the history of the PlayStation.
Sony PlayStation 4 Sales Zoom Past 30 million, Competing Against XboxAccording to Sony’s product timeline, the PlayStation, which was only recently the best-selling gaming system in history, had shipped to retailers up to 30 million units after two years of being launched. The PS2, which was released in 2000, sold up to 150 million units.
The PS4 is currently leading in the gaming console industry compared to its main competitor, the Xbox One, which was introduced into the market in November 2013, only a week after the introduction of the PS4.
A year ago, Microsoft said its Xbox One had sold over 10 million units, but the company has so far not revised these figures. According to estimates by Michael Pachter, a Wedbush Securities Analyst, Microsoft had sold up to 14 million Xbox Ones before releasing Halo 5: Guardians, a video game that is anticipated to boost the sale of Xbox consoles.
However, analysts conversant with the gaming industry note that Microsoft’s figures presented one year ago may not be an accurate or appropriate point of comparison.
The PS4 has always performed better in terms of sales compared to Microsoft’s Xbox One, despite Microsoft traditionally having a stronghold in North America.
For the first time since April, the Xbox One was the top performing console in the US, with sales increases likely boosted by the burgeoning sales of the Halo 5: Guardians game.
Other small competitors include Nintendo Wii U, which was launched a year before the Xbox One and PS4. Nintendo had shipped just 10.7 million units globally by the end of September 2015.
